Speculation regarding the future of Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya is intensifying ahead of the IPL (Indian Premier League) 2027 season. Reports have claimed that discussions are underway between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians concerning Hardik. Furthermore, it is being suggested that teams such as Delhi Capitals (DC), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are also keen to acquire the Indian all-rounder.
Amidst all this speculation, Mumbai Indians have now issued an official response for the first time. While the franchise has denied any ongoing trade talks, they have clarified that all options will be considered following a post-season review. A spokesperson stated that the team is evaluating various possibilities, but no final decision has been reached yet.
“Our post-season review is currently underway, and we are looking into all aspects of the team. Contrary to reports, we are not engaged in conversations regarding player trades; any trade would only be possible once the review is complete,” a Mumbai Indians spokesperson told Sportstar. “A range of options and ideas is being evaluated, which takes time, so no decisions have been made.”
Although Mumbai Indians have dismissed the trade rumors, their statement hints that significant decisions could be made in the future. Reports had claimed that talks were taking place between CSK and MI regarding a potential trade for Hardik Pandya. According to these reports, Mumbai Indians were interested in acquiring Ayush Mhatre and Shivam Dube, whereas Chennai was in favour of trading Shivam Dube, Dewald Brevis, and a sum of approximately ₹10 crore. Additionally, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Rajasthan Royals were also showing interest in Hardik. However, Mumbai Indians have currently refuted all such claims.
Team’s Poor Performance Under Hardik’s Captaincy
The journey with Mumbai Indians has not been smooth for Hardik Pandya, who was appointed captain in place of Rohit Sharma ahead of the 2024 season. In the 2024 IPL season, the team finished at the bottom of the points table. Subsequently, in the 2025 season, Mumbai Indians reached the playoffs but failed to clinch the title. Last season, the team won only four matches and finished in ninth place after suffering ten defeats. During this period, reports regarding internal team discord, a lack of support from senior players, and persistent injuries also surfaced, raising questions about Hardik Pandya’s captaincy.
While Mumbai Indians’ official statement currently dismisses reports of a trade, it also clarifies that major changes within the team are possible following the post-season review. In other words, no final decision has been made yet regarding Hardik Pandya leaving Mumbai Indians, but it is certain that the franchise will take several crucial decisions in the coming days.
