Hosts England maintained their flawless start to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a convincing 38-run win over Scotland in a high-scoring Group B match at Headingley. Even without injured captain and star batter Nat Sciver-Brunt, the world No. 2 side delivered a composed performance, posting 200/5 before limiting Scotland to 162/7. Stand-in captain Charlie Dean managed her bowlers effectively in Sciver-Brunt’s absence.
Sophia Dunkley guides England women innings
Scotland won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that immediately looked the correct one. Former England spinner Kirstie Gordon, opening the bowling for Scotland, delivered a stunning start by removing Amy Jones for a golden duck with the very first ball of the match. Gordon struck again in the seventh over to dismiss the other opener, Danni Wyatt-Hodge, leaving the hosts temporarily rattled.
However, Sophia Dunkley, elevated to No. 3 in Sciver-Brunt’s absence, anchored the innings beautifully. Capitalizing on being dropped early on, Dunkley smashed an entertaining 57 off 37 balls. She combined for crucial partnerships with Wyatt-Hodge and Alice Capsey (40) to rebuild the foundations.
When the experienced Heather Knight fell for 25 in the 17th over, England sat at 139/5 and risked missing a massive total. Enter Freya Kemp and Dani Gibson. The pair unleashed a spectacular late-overs blitz, plundering 61 runs off the final 21 deliveries. Kemp’s explosive 39 off 16 balls and Gibson’s blistering 30 off 11 balls pushed England to a psychological milestone of 200.
Spirited Scotland women fall short
Chasing a daunting 201 for a historic upset, Scotland refused to back down quietly. Openers Darcey Carter (29) and Katherine Fraser (23) attacked early on, racing to 38 within four overs. The breakthrough arrived when Dean bowled Fraser to disrupt the momentum.
From there, world No. 1 bowler Sophie Ecclestone took full control of the middle overs. Spinning the ball sharply, Ecclestone cleaned up Scottish captain Kathryn Bryce for 6 and got the wicket of Carter in her very next over, finishing with excellent figures of 2/23.
Sarah Bryce offered stiff resistance with a quickfire 34 off 24 balls, but her dismissal by Linsey Smith took the wind out of the visitors’ sails. A late, entertaining 47-run stand between 18-year-old debutant Pippa Sproul (27) and Kirstie Gordon lessened the margin of defeat, but the target ultimately proved a mountain too high to climb.
England women remain top of Group B with three wins from three and six points, setting up a much-anticipated meeting with the West Indies at Lord’s on Wednesday. Scotland can still take heart from a spirited batting effort against elite opposition, with their 160-plus total highlighting clear progress ahead of their next match against New Zealand.
