West Indies overcome Scotland scare in T20 World Cup thriller

Another thriller followed the South Africa-Pakistan classic as West Indies survived a mighty Scotland scare at Headingley, squeezing home by seven runs in a pulsating Group B clash at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. On a day of wild momentum swings, Scotland pushed the former champions to the brink, but West Indies women found just enough nerve at the death to impress a roaring Leeds crowd and keep their unbeaten campaign alive.

Stafanie Taylor rescues West Indies women from early setback

Having won the toss and elected to field, Scotland immediately put the heavy hitters from the Caribbean on the ropes. The Scottish bowling unit was remarkably disciplined, choking the West Indies’ scoring avenues and restricting them to a modest 33/1 in the powerplay. Star bowler Katherine Fraser impressed all, dismissing Qiana Joseph with a spectacular boundary catch before tearing through Hayley Matthews’ defence to castle the West Indies captain.

When the saviour of the previous match, Shemaine Campbelle, fell for a gritty 36, the West Indies found themselves stuttering at 124/6 after 18 overs. Enter veteran Stafanie Taylor. Missing the opening game against New Zealand, Taylor engineered a breathtaking rescue act. She launched a blistering assault in the death overs, adding unbeaten 47 off a mere 19 balls, including 34 runs in boundaries alone. Blasting 26 runs herself across the final two overs, Taylor propelled her side to a competitive 153/6, giving the West Indies bowlers a fighting total on a spin-friendly surface.

A brave chase by Scotland women interrupted by Alleyne and Matthews

What followed was a chasing masterclass that thoroughly rattled the former champions. Scotland flew out of the blocks with no fear. Fraser (20) and Darcey Carter took a liking to the West Indian pace attack, motoring to a sensational 50 runs inside the first 5 overs.

However, Matthews (3/19) single-handedly triggered a collapse. In a magical sixth over, she cleaned up Fraser and then dismissed her opposing captain, Kathryn Bryce, just two balls later. Scotland lost two more wickets in next two overs and overall four wickets for just seven runs, sliding catastrophically from 51/0 to 58/4.

Yet, the Scotland women refused to give in. Despite suffering a painful leg cramp early on that heavily restricted her running, Carter played a heroic, lone-warrior knock. Striking a magnificent 59 off 62 balls, she forged a vital 58-run partnership with Ailsa Lister (33). Capitalizing on some undisciplined West Indian fielding display, Scotland fought tooth and nail to arrive at the 18th over needing a gettable 22 runs from 12 balls.

With the match balanced on a knife-edge at 132/5, Caribbean medium-pacer Aaliyah Alleyne stepped up to deliver an unforgettable 19th over. Alleyne’s cold-blooded triple-wicket over broke Scottish hearts, as she finished with sensational figures of 3/11. Defending 17 from the final over, Quiana Joseph held her nerve under pressure. Scotland’s brave chase ended on the last ball when they were bowled out for 146, falling just seven runs short. The thrilling win kept West Indies unbeaten in the World Cup, while Scotland showed they belonged on cricket’s biggest stage.
