Sunil Gavaskar lashes out at BCCI on Surya issue
Suryakumar Yadav has been stripped of the Indian T20 team captaincy, despite having led India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the captain in his place. However, Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his displeasure with this decision by the BCCI. He believes that the captaincy should not have been taken away from Suryakumar Yadav in this manner. In his statement, Gavaskar said, “You could also argue that there are still two years left until the 2028 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics. A five-match T20 series against England is coming up; Surya should have been given a chance in that series. Perhaps you could have considered a different approach after that.”
Gavaskar added, “But the selection committee thought differently—reasoning that if a change is to be made, it should start now—and that is why they initiated it. We must remember that Suryakumar Yadav is 35 or 36 years old. In two years, he will be 38. If the goal is to win a gold medal in 2028 or retain the T20 World Cup, you need to appoint a captain who is relatively younger and possesses some experience in international captaincy. Shreyas Iyer, who will now take over the captaincy, has that experience.”
“I don’t need to change my personality”, says Shreyas Iyer
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Team India for the T20 series against Ireland and England on Saturday. The board also announced the Asian Games squad. The most significant development was the appointment of Shreyas Iyer as the captain of India’s T20 team. Suryakumar Yadav was not only stripped of the captaincy but also dropped from the team. Shreyas Iyer’s first reaction after the appointment has also surfaced.
Shreyas Iyer said at an event, “I don’t need to change my personality. I want to remain the same person I was before. I will not try to be like anyone else or live under anyone’s patronage. I have always liked challenges. The level of cricket in Mumbai is very high and the competition is also very tough. Every second child there dreams of representing Mumbai.”
Tamim Iqbal elected as BCB president
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has a new boss as their former legendary batsman Tamim Iqbal has been officially elected as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Tamim will hold this position for the next four years. He previously headed the board’s ad hoc committee, and now his position within the BCB has become even stronger. The government took the decision to dissolve the board after a five-member investigation committee recommended action following its probe into allegations surrounding the BCB elections held in October last year. Meanwhile, Tamim has become the youngest-ever BCB president at the age of 37.
