Sachin Tendulkar, considered one of the world’s greatest batsmen, has offered some suggestions for a more equitable competition between bat and ball in the IPL. He called for the abolition of the impact player rule, a point echoed by many before him.
Several current cricketers, including Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel, have called for this rule to be changed. Under the Impact Player Rule, which was implemented in 2023, teams can replace one player in their playing XI during a match.
‘Impact Player rule should be removed’
Sachin said that this rule should be removed because it is like giving advantage to the batsmen in an already challenging environment for the bowlers. Speaking at the ESPNcricinfo Awards, Sachin said, “Personally, I feel that the Impact Player rule should be removed. I think in the T20 format, when you have only 20 overs and you are adding another batsman in an already challenging environment for the bowlers, it seems like an imbalance to me.”
Sachin has two more suggestions to change the imbalance between bat and ball in the IPL. He believes that the powerplay should be divided into two parts and that a bowler should be allowed to bowl five overs per match.
Sachin said, “In the six-over powerplay, only two fielders should be present outside the circle. In this, the first four overs should be left for the batsmen, in which the fielding will remain the same as it is now. After this, two overs should be for the bowlers and the fielding team should decide when to take the powerplay of the last two overs. In this, there should be an extra fielder outside the circle.”
