It was a historic day in Kirtipur as Nepal’s premier spinner Sandeep Lamichhane became the fastest bowler to 150 One-Day International (ODI) wickets. Lamichhane took just 73 matches to achieve this feat, comfortably beating the record initially held by Australia pacer Mitchell Starc.
Fastest to 150 ODI wickets (By matches)
73 Sandeep Lamichhane (NEP)
77 Mitchell Starc (AUS)
78 Saqlain Mushtaq (PAK)
80 Rashid Khan (AFG)
80 Mohammed Shami (IND)
Lamichhane achieved this feat during the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 fixture against Scotland at home. He needed just two wickets to achieve this landmark and eventually finished with figures of 3/47 to put Scotland in trouble. He first cleaned up George Munsey and then dismissed the dangerous Brandon McMullen for 73 off just 44 to pick up his 150th wicket. To add to Scotland’s woes, he also dismissed their wicketkeeper-batter Matt Cross for just one.

In fact, Lamichhane is the only bowler to have picked up over 100 wickets in League 2. He has 111 wickets in the tournament at 18.47 and an economy rate of 4.22. Nepal are on the rise in League 2 this cycle, having won three of their last five matches. A win today will see them go fifth on the points table, just six points behind fourth-placed Netherlands.
Lamichhane made his ODI debut against Netherlands in 2018 and, since then, has been among the top bowlers in the world in white-ball cricket. Other than 150-plus ODI wickets, the star spinner also has 136 T20I wickets. He is also the only Nepal player to have played in the IPL, BBL and CPL, among other T20 leagues.
