Trinidad and Tobago vs Leeward Islands match abandoned due to ‘murderous’ pitch

Trinidad and Tobago’s match against the Leeward Islands (Trinidad and Tobago vs Leeward Islands) in the West Indies Championship got called off after a scary moment on the field. One of the pitches was so unpredictable that a good-length delivery struck the batsman’s helmet. The situation turned serious — he had to go off on a stretcher and ended up in the hospital. Cricket West Indies (CWI) put out a statement confirming everything.

The four-day game at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium ended early on Tuesday morning. The umpires said it just wasn’t safe to keep playing with the pitch breaking down the way it was. They cancelled the match and called it a draw, putting player safety first.

It all started in Leeward Islands’ second innings, when Trinidad and Tobago’s Jayden Seales bowled a good-length ball. Instead of bouncing normally, it shot up and whacked Jeremiah Lewis on the helmet. The ball before had stayed low — so the sudden bounce was a nasty surprise. Lewis dropped right after getting hit, kicked his helmet in frustration, got some medical attention, and was taken to the hospital. CWI says he’s stable now.

Cricket West Indies issues statement

A statement issued by Cricket West Indies said, “After consultation with the curator, the umpires determined that the pitch was beyond repair. The pitch was dangerous and unfit for resumption. Therefore, the match was declared a draw. The decision to abandon the match was made in accordance with the conditions governing the competition. Under these conditions, play may be stopped when the on-field umpires determine that it is dangerous or unsound to continue play.”

The Board promised to fix the pitches before the next games, including the tournament final. They promised that future matches will have pitches that are both safe and allow for real competition. Player safety is their main priority and plan to raise pitch standards and make sure match operations at all venues are solid.
