IPL winning captain arrested on charge of drink-driving

Australian cricket star and the captain of Karachi Kings David Warner is in real trouble right now. Police in Maroubra, Sydney arrested him for drink-driving, apparently during a routine random breath test. Warner did pulled over and parked before reaching the testing area, but the officers still checked him out and found he’d had too much to drink.

Later, at the police station, a test showed Warner’s blood alcohol level was 0.104—that’s way above the legal limit in Australia. Now, he’s got to show up in court next month to answer for it. Warner was using the break between games in the Pakistan Super League 2026 season to visit his family back home in Australia. He’s still leading Karachi Kings, and everyone expected him back in Pakistan for their next match.

Warner has retired from international cricket

Even though Warner retired from international cricket, he’s still a huge name. Not long ago, he played for Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League and crushed it with 433 runs in 8 games. He was named captain of the tournament’s ‘Team of the Season,’ even though his team struggled overall. Warner’s had an amazing career. He’s played for Australia in 112 Tests, 161 ODIs, and 110 T20Is, scoring over 15,000 runs across all formats.

The Aussie batter led Sunrisers Hyderabad to an IPL title in 2016. Right now, Karachi Kings are sitting second on the PSL table after three straight wins with Warner as the charismatic captain. The next match, Karachi Kings vs Peshawar Zalmi, is set for April 9th. With this arrest hanging over his head, nobody knows if David Warner will make it back to rejoin his PSL team in time. Seeing a controversy like this tied to such a big player is tough for his fans and the franchise.

Update: Cricket NSW came out on Wednesday and said they’re fully aware of Warner’s drunk driving arrest. Even so, they’re not turning their backs on him. They’re making it clear he needs support and some serious education about safe driving—and honestly, the rest of the NSW squad does too. Safe driving isn’t just a box to tick and they want everyone to understand how crucial it is.

CNSW CEO Lee Germon said, “Cricket NSW is a strong advocate of safe driving, including avoiding drink driving, and takes incidents of this nature very seriously. David is aware of the seriousness of these allegations. We will support him through the upcoming process.”

David Warner retired from international cricket in January 2024. He is currently is the skipper of the Karachi Kings side in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The left-handed batter is on his way back to Pakistan and is scheduled to arrive in Karachi on 9 April for the second leg of the competition’s 11th edition.
