Yuvraj Singh revealed in an interview that MS Dhoni was the one who told him the selectors weren’t considering him anymore. After that conversation, Yuvraj decided to retire from all forms of cricket on June 10, 2019. Talking to Sports Tak, Yuvraj shared that when he was in and out of the team at the age of 36 or 37, he never heard directly from the National Cricket Academy, captain Virat Kohli, or coach Ravi Shastri. None of them reached out to him personally.
Yuvaj said, “In my case, there was zero clarity. No clarity from the NCA, captain or coach. I was like stuck. I was 36-37. I was like, ‘what do I do?’ I felt like I should get some respect for whatever cricket that I played.”
Dhoni said the truth over the phone
Yuvraj Singh revealed he wasn’t getting any answers from anywhere, so he called Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni wasn’t the captain at the time, but he was monitoring the situation. According to Yuvraj, “I spoke to MS Dhoni on phone and he gave me the right perspective. He was neither the captain nor he had to do anything with it. But, he was watching everything that was going on. I got the clarity after that. I was told that you won’t be able to pass the fitness test so you should retire. I said that it is my call to retire or not and yours to play me or not.”
Yuvraj Singh made his international debut in 2000 and retired in June 2019. He played 304 ODIs, 58 T20Is, and 40 Tests for India, scoring over 11,000 runs. He was a member of the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup winning teams. The left-hander performed brilliantly in the 2011 ODI World Cup, winning the Player of the Tournament award. He scored 362 runs in eight innings at an average of 90.50, including four half-centuries and one century. He also took 15 wickets in the tournament.
