South Africa secured their spot in the Super 8s after beating New Zealand by 7 wickets with 17 balls to spare. It was a clinical chase by the Proteas after the Kiwis posted a competitive 175/7. Aiden Markram led it with an unbeaten 86 off 44.
In a must win game against Scotland at the Eden Gardens, England completed a shaky chase, followed by Tom Baton’s unbeaten 63 off 41. After losing a couple of major wickets early, the recovered and finished the job in the 19th over to keep their Super 8 hopes alive.
In the third encounter of the day, Ireland posted a massive 235/5 and later bundled out Oman for a mere 139. Oman were never in the chase as only three of their players could score in double digit.
Chinnaswamy to get new stands named after India legends
The Karnataka State Cricket Association announced to name stands at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in the honour of former India captains Shantha Rangaswamy, Rahul Dravid, and Anil Kumble.
Rahul Dravid has been a reliable name for India when it comes to batting. He is India’s second-highest run-scorer in Tests after Sachin Tendulkar, amassing 13,288 runs in 164 matches in the format. With 10,889 runs in 344 ODIs, Dravid is also the fifth highest run-scored for India in the 50-over format.
Shantha Rangaswamy was India Women’s first captain in 1976, and the first to lead the team to a Test series win. A pioneer of the game, Rangaswamy also scored India’s first Test century in women’s cricket. Meanwhile, Anil Kumble is highest wicket-taker for India in Tests and ODIs, with 619 and 337 wickets, respectively.
Neesham’s wish for the heartbreaking 2019 WC final
James Neesham’s social-media post after the 2019 ODI World Cup final broke the internet. A heartbroken Neesham wrote, “Kids, don’t take up sport. Take up baking or something. Die at 60 really fat and happy.” It came after a tied Super Over in the match that saw New Zealand losing the match eventually to England on boundary count.
After the match between South Africa and Afghanistan that saw two Super Overs in the T20 World Cup clash, Neesham said, “It’s good now that you had the opportunity to play a second Super Over when the first one’s a tie “That would have been nice…”
Imran Khan to be shifted to hospital
As per reports, former Pakistan captain and Prime Minister, Imran Khan is going through major health issues and to address the same, he will be moved to hospital. A government minister, Tariq Fazal Chaudhary wrote in X, “considering his health, it has been decided to shift him to hospital and form a medical board”.
Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, former Pakistan cricketers have raised their voices and showed concerns over Imran’s health condition in prison. The decision came amidst rising pressure on the government from the opposition to provide appropriate medical care to Imran Khan.
