NZ vs SA: Easy chase helps South Africa defeat New Zealand by 7 wickets in 1st T20I

NZ vs SA: South Africa turned things around in style, beating New Zealand by seven wickets in the opening match of the T20 series. Their bowlers set the tone right from the start and New Zealand just couldn’t handle the pressure and collapsed for 91 runs in Mount Maunganui. Things went off track early for the Kiwis. Mitchell Santner won the toss, backed his batsmen, and chose to bat first. That call really didn’t work out.

The South African attack was relentless. Nqobani Mokoena ripped through the Kiwis, picking up three wickets and making their middle order look clueless. Keshav Maharaj, Gerald Coetzee, and Ottneil Baartman grabbed two wickets each and the whole lineup crumbled in 14.3 overs. James Neesham managed to put up a bit of a fight and he smashed 26 off 21 with a couple of boundaries and a six, but he didn’t get much support. Seven Kiwi batsmen didn’t even make it to double digits.

With just 92 needed, South Africa paced themselves and didn’t panic. Connor Esterhuizen anchored the chase perfectly, finishing unbeaten on 45 off 48 balls. The Proteas wrapped things up in 16.4 overs, losing only three wickets along the way.

This win gives South Africa a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20 series and a nice bit of payback too, since New Zealand knocked them out in the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-finals. This was the teams’ first meeting since then and South Africa came out looking sharper.

Brief Scores:

New Zealand: 91 all out (14.3 overs) [James Neesham 26; Nqobani Mokoena 3-26, Gerald Coetzee 2-14, Ottneil Baartman 2-22].
South Africa: 93/3 (16.4 overs) [Connor Esterhuizen 45*, Mitchell Santner 1-8].
Result: South Africa won by 7 wickets.
