Sanju Samson’s 97 power India past West Indies, seals semifinal berth

Suryakumar Yadav-led Team India (IND vs WI) punched their ticket to the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals with a five-wicket win over the West Indies in the Super 8s. West Indies put up a solid 195 for 4 in their 20 overs, but India chased it down, finishing at 199 for 5 with four balls to spare. Now, India’s just two wins from another World Cup trophy. Sanju Samson stole the show at the Eden Gardens, smashing an unbeaten 97 and carrying India home.

West Indies batted first at Eden in Kolkata and put up a solid 195 for 4 in their 20 overs. Roston Chase chipped in with 40, while Jason Holder stayed unbeaten on 37. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of India’s bowlers, picking up two wickets. Team India will now face England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 5th.

India’s chase started off shaky. Both Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan fell for just 10 each. Tilak Varma came in and played a quickfire 27 off 15, and captain Suryakumar Yadav added 18 from 16. But through it all, Samson stood his ground. He built a 58-run partnership with Suryakumar in just 35 balls, keeping India in the hunt.

He didn’t stop there. Samson added 42 with Tilak Varma, 38 with Hardik Pandya, and then finished things off with an unbeaten 20-run stand alongside Shivam Dube. He sealed the deal by hitting a boundary off the second ball of Romario Shepherd’s over.

Earlier, West Indies had been 125 for 4 after 15 overs, but they exploded at the end, piling on 70 runs in the last 5. Rovman Powell and Jason Holder put together a crucial unbroken partnership of 76 runs in just 35 balls for the fifth wicket. Before that, captain Shai Hope and Roston Chase had stitched up 68 runs off 53 balls for the third wicket.
