Chennai Super Kings suffered three back-to-back defeats at the start of the IPL 2026 and remained at the bottom of the IPL points table after Sunday’s match against RCB. After losing the match, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming spoke about the return of Dewald Brevis to regain the balance of the side.
Fleming hints at return of Dewald Brevis
Brevis, who missed the first three games of the ongoing IPL after suffering from a side strain, trained with the side ahead of Chennai’s home match against Punjab Kings last week. Brevis’ addition to the team last year proved to be valuable thanks to his fearless batting at a strike rate of 180. He scored 225 runs in six innings, including an impressive 17 sixes off just 125 balls. CSK retained him for IPL 2026 after securing his services in IPL 2025 as a replacement. No wonder Chennai Super Kings are “looking forward to getting him back,” according to the head coach.
Speaking at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, Fleming said: “We hope he is going to be right for the next game. We have five days between the next game. We have been conservative, and hopefully, these next five days go as well as we have planned, and he is ready to go. It’s a big loss, but we are looking forward to getting him back.”
“Bowling is under pressure in the IPL”
CSK’s lacklustre bowling has been a major concern since the beginning of this IPL. They failed to defend 209 against the Punjab Kings and then gave away 250 runs to RCB. Apart from Khaleel Ahmed, all of them turned out to be expensive, especially at the death. “Bowling is under pressure in the IPL, especially with the impact rule. You’re seeing players who are taking the game on, and their skill set is very high”, Fleming remarked.
However, he opined, “So, look, all bowling attacks are under pressure. We need to execute better. There’s no doubt about it. But there’s a lot of pressure on bowling units, especially in good conditions.”
