The Netherlands defeated the United Arab Emirates by three wickets in the 140th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup League Two 2023–27, chasing down a target of 245 in 43.5 overs. The victory was built around a magnificent century from Max O’Dowd, although the UAE made the contest competitive by picking up crucial wickets in the middle overs.
Batting first, the UAE posted 244/8 in their allotted 50 overs. Rahul Chopra top-scored with 82 runs, while Akshdeep Nath contributed 68. Timm van der Gugten was the pick of the Dutch bowlers, claiming five wickets for 39 runs to restrict the UAE to a manageable total.
Rahul Chopra’s courageous 82 goes in vain
Skipper Rahul Chopra’s innings was particularly remarkable as he retired hurt after suffering a distress but returned to the crease to continue his fight for the team. He eventually scored 82 runs, providing the UAE with valuable stability and helping them put up a competitive total. However, his determined effort ultimately went unrewarded as the Netherlands completed the chase to secure victory.
UAE bowlers break the partnership but fail to seal victory
The Netherlands began their chase confidently, with O’Dowd and Cedric de Lange putting together a 102-run opening partnership. Their attacking approach put the Dutch side firmly in control and brought the required total within reach. However, the dismissal of de Lange for 23 changed the momentum.
The UAE struck back by taking wickets in quick succession, with Khuzaima Tanveer among the leading performers with the ball. The pressure briefly threatened to derail the Netherlands’ chase, but O’Dowd’s superb 103 off 79 balls proved decisive. Despite the UAE’s spirited fightback, the Netherlands reached 245/7 in 43.5 overs to seal a three-wicket victory.
