ENG vs PAK: England were left battling for survival after Pakistan’s seamers exploited helpful conditions on a rain-delayed opening day of the second Test at Lord’s, with the hosts reaching 248 for nine at stumps.

Pakistan won the toss and opted to field, a decision that quickly paid dividends under overcast skies. Mohammad Abbas led the attack brilliantly, removing Ben Duckett for 17 and Emilio Gay for eight before trapping England captain Joe Root lbw for just four. Harry Brook, who had scored 91 in the first Test, was then bowled by Mohammad Ali for 15 as England slipped to 80 for four.

Jordan Cox again provided the backbone of England’s innings. Batting at No. 3, Cox produced another composed knock, scoring 55 and showing impressive control despite the movement generated by Pakistan’s seamers. Dan Lawrence contributed 17 before being run out for the fifth wicket.

Abbas finished the day with four wickets

Cox’s resistance was followed by a crucial counterattack from Jamie Smith. The wicketkeeper-batter struck 61, adding valuable runs when England desperately needed them. His partnership with Cox helped England recover significantly before both were eventually dismissed.

Pakistan continued to chip away at the lower order, but Gus Atkinson’s unbeaten 34 gave England another important boost. Josh Tongue was unbeaten on one when bad light ended play after 56 overs.

Abbas was Pakistan’s outstanding bowler, finishing the day with four wickets, while Mohammad Ali also made important breakthroughs. Pakistan’s disciplined attack and England’s early collapse ensured the visitors ended the day firmly on top, although England’s lower order had dragged the hosts to a total that still offered some hope of recovery on Friday.
