Afghanistan’s emphatic 4-0 ODI series win over Ireland in Belfast was more than a routine away triumph. It was a statement in one of cricket’s most intriguing modern rivalries, a contest built not on decades of tradition but on parallel journeys, shared milestones and repeated high-pressure clashes.
After the opening match was washed out, Afghanistan won four games in a row. They closed the series with a record chase that underlined how far their one-day cricket has evolved.
The final ODI: The tone of rivalry changed forever
The final ODI captured the tone of the series. Ireland, desperate for a consolation victory, posted 298/7, thanks to Curtis Campher’s aggressive 96 and Harry Tector’s steady fifty. When Liam McCarthy removed both Afghan openers early, Ireland appeared to have a genuine chance. But Rahmat Shah’s unbeaten 143 and Sediqullah Atal’s 98 transformed the chase. Their 201-run third wicket stand became an Afghanistan ODI record, and the successful pursuit of 299 marked the country’s highest run chase in the format.
That result followed Afghanistan’s dominant batting performance in the fourth ODI, where Atal struck 143 and Ibrahim Zadran made 107 in a commanding total of 343/9. Ireland fought hard through Andrew Balbirnie and Campher. But Afghanistan’s combination of top-order authority, middle-overs control and wicket-taking spin proved too complete to be true. Rashid Khan again shaped crucial passages with the ball, reinforcing Afghanistan’s familiar strength in pressure moments.
Atal top scored in the series with 313 runs in 4 innings as Rashid led the wicket tally with 12 wickets. For Ireland, Campher (207 runs) and Gavin Hoey (7 wickets) led the runs and wickets tally respectively.
Clash of new-age rivals
The sweep also changes the tone of the Afghanistan vs Ireland rivalry. For years, these teams were viewed as near equals- ambitious Associate-era competitors who rose together, earned Test status in 2017, and often measured their progress against each other. This series points to a growing gap between the teams in ODI cricket. Ireland competed well at times, with Campher, Tector and Balbirnie offering resistance. But they struggled to maintain bowling pressure and failed to turn strong positions into victories. Afghanistan looked stronger, deeper and more clinical. Atal was the breakout performer, Rahmat supplied experienced calm, and Rashid remained the decisive weapon in key moments.
Historically linked by shared rise and rivalry, Afghanistan now hold clear bragging rights after the 4-0 sweep. The result shows their growth into a refined ODI force, while Ireland must improve their finishing and consistency to keep pace.
