Shubman Gill scripts history as India go 1-0 up against Afghanistan in rain-curtailed ODI

It was a long wait for the match to begin, but when the weather cleared, we were treated to a 25-over-per-side contest, which proved to be an entertainer. In the end, it was an easy victory for India, who rode on a magnificent 84* off 66 from Shubman Gill along with useful contributions from Ishan Kishan (34) and KL Rahul (39*).

During the course of his innings, Gill became the fastest Indian to 3,000 runs and the second-fastest overall to the landmark. Only Hashim Amla got to 3,000 ODI runs faster than Gill.

After Afghanistan were reduced to 26/3 in the fifth over, Rahmanullah Gurbaz played one of the best counter-attacking innings, smashing 102 off just 51 deliveries, hitting as many as eight fours and eight sixes. He registered the fastest century for Afghanistan and also the second-fastest against India in ODI cricket. Moreover, he put on 116 off 66 for the fourth wicket with Hashmatullah Shahidi (27) after Afghanistan were reduced to 26/3 in the fifth over.

Debutants shine

Debutants Harsh Dubey (3/47) and Gurnoor Brar (3/27) were the pick of the bowlers for India, while Arshdeep Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy picked up two wickets apiece.

Chasing 195 to win, India never looked in any sort of trouble despite losing Rohit Sharma in the sixth over. However, from there on, Gill built crucial partnerships with Kishan (70), Shreyas Iyer (26) and Rahul (53*) to take India home by seven wickets with 2.1 overs to spare.

India will hope to clinch the series in the next game, scheduled to be played on June 17 (Wednesday) in Lucknow.
