History for Scotland as Kathryn & Sarah Bryce lead side to maiden Women’s T20 World Cup victory

Kathryn Bryce (60) and Sarah Bryce (49) led the way as Scotland registered their maiden win of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Their effort saw their side put up 161/5 on the board against Ireland before some brilliant bowling from Kirstie Gordon (3/16) and Katherine Fraser (3/19) helped Scotland to a comfortable 40-run victory in Manchester. Kathryn followed her batting performance with 2/19 and fittingly picked up the last wicket to fall.

History for Scotland

Kathryn and Sarah put on 106 for the third wicket, which is the highest for Scotland at the World Cup. In fact, before today, none of their partnerships even crossed 50. Kathryn is also the first Scotland Women batter to score a fifty in the T20 World Cup.

This was just the eighth instance where a player had scored a fifty and picked up two wickets or more in a Women’s T20 World Cup match

Before this, Scotland Women had qualified for just one T20 World Cup edition, which was in 2024. However, they went on to lose all four of their matches.

Ireland never got going

Tasked with 162 to win, Ireland kept losing wickets at regular intervals. In fact, they had just a couple of 30-run stands and a vital 38 off 22 partnership between Orla Prendergast (33) and Arlene Kelly for the seventh wicket that gave the Irish a glimmer of hope.

However, once Prendergast was dismissed in the 17th over, it was well and truly over for Ireland, and a historic moment for Scotland.

Scotland will hope to make it two in two when they take on West Indies next on June 18 at Headingley. Ireland, on the other hand, take on England in Southampton on June 16.

Brief scores

Scotland Women 161/5 in 20 overs (Kathryn Bryce 60, Sarah Bryce 49; Ava Canning 3/27) beat Ireland Women 121 in 19.1 overs (Amy Hunter 39, Orla Prendergast 33; Kirstie Gordon 3/16) by 40 runs

Player of the Match: Kathryn Bryce
