IPL 2026: When will MS Dhoni play for CSK? Michael Hussey provides update

MS Dhoni has not played a single game for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. A calf injury has kept him out of action so far. However, batting coach Michael Hussey remains confident of having the former skipper back in the team soon.

“He is progressing really well. I know he is pushing hard to get back as soon as he possibly can. I know al the fans want to see him out there playing as well. We are hopeful in the next few games…we want him back as quickly as possible as well. Obviously, he needs to be close to 100%, ready to give his best. He has been batting well in the nets, looks good in the nets, running hard between the wickets too,” Hussey said on air during CSK’s innings during the clash against Mumbai Indians (MI).

Injury a concern for CSK?

Due to the calf injury, Hussey believes that the running between the wickets becomes a bit of a hassle for Dhoni. As someone who comes into bat in the latter stages of the innings, Dhoni is someone who pinches the quick ones and twos besides smacking a few big ones.

Hussey also confirmed that Dhoni will play as a wicketkeeper and not just as an impact player. “I’m pretty sure he’ll be behind the stumps. With that calf injury, it’s just the running [that’s a concern],” he said.

Dhoni is the highest run-getter for CSK in the IPL, with 4,865 runs in 248 matches at a strike rate of 139.11. He led CSK to five IPL titles, before handing over the reins first to Ravindra Jadeja and now to Ruturaj Gaikwad.

In the ongoing season, CSK are eighth on the points table with just two wins from six games.
