Rassie van der Dussen retires from international cricket

South African star batsman Rassie van der Dussen has announced his retirement from international cricket. As the cricket world is currently focused on IPL 2026, the Proteas batter brings curtains down on his international career. On Thursday, he revealed in an emotional post shared on social media that he will no longer be seen playing in the South African jersey.

Rassie van der Dussen, the right-handed top-order batsman, hasn’t played for South Africa in recent months. The fans noticed his name wasn’t on Cricket South Africa’s latest central contracts list. And now, he has decided to officially call time on his international career. Dussen shared a long message on Instagram to announce his retirement. Though his international career has come to an end, the charismatic batter will continue to represent his domestic side, the Lions.

In the post he said, “It is with a proud heart and a profound sense of gratitude that I announce my retirement from international cricket. To wear the Proteas jersey is a feat that demands a level of resilience and dedication that both tests, and rewards you in the most incredible way. To have played for my country has been the greatest honour of my life. This journey has been paved with years of sacrifice, but the privilege of representing South Africa was worth every moment.”

The South African also paid his gratitude to the administrators, CSA’s coaches and his wife Lara, as well as the people of South Africa and the fans. He added, “We lived and breathed the game together, and to be the one to carry our family name onto the international stage was a responsibility I was proud to embrace. I am merely a product of my environment, and of years of camaraderie, love, and pushing for greatness.”

37-year-old Rassie van der Dussen made his debut for South Africa in 2018. The right-handed batter featured for the Proteas side across all three formats. He played 18 Tests, 71 One-Day Internationals and 57 Twenty20 Internationals for South Africa between October 2018 and August 2025. But he made his greatest impact in ODI cricket where he scored six centuries and 17 half-centuries. In the IPL, Rassie played for the Rajasthan Royals in 2022. He played three matches, scoring a total of 22 runs. He was bought for ₹1 crore in the auction in the same year.
