Mumbai Indians register their highest successful run-chase in IPL history to break jinx

It was a historic beginning to Mumbai Indians’ (MI) Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign as they not just won the game by six wickets, but also registered their highest successful run-chase in the tournament’s history. Set 221 to win, MI rode on superb fifties from Rohit Sharma (78) and Ryan Rickelton (81) and chased it down with six overs and five balls to spare.

Highest successful chases for MI in IPL

221 vs KKR, Mumbai, 2026
219 vs CSK, Delhi, 2021
215 vs PBKS, Mohali, 2023
213 vs RR, Mumbai, 2023

The record for the highest successful chase in IPL history is with Punjab Kings (PBKS), who chased down 262 against KKR in 2024.

With this win, MI have also won their first opening game of an IPL season since 2012. Since then, they have lost their opening fixtures of the IPL on 13 occasions, thereby ending the jinx.

They will look to make it two in two when they take on Delhi Capitals (DC) in their next game on April 4 (Saturday) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
